Bun Buns

It is really tricky to get picks of these little kits. They are still real skittish around us. There are 2 of them in this picture, but we have 3 altogether.

Holy S*#%!

As inappropriate as these words may be, they were nevertheless the first words out of my mouth today as I walked up to the rabbit colony. I saw a baby bunny. We have Bunnies! I only saw one and I ran to tell Stef. We walked back and saw one again. It went into the rabbit hole and we haven't seen anything else from the rabbits today so I haven't got a picture yet. I hope there is more than one. I'm so excited!! Yea!!

Bad Ama

We had a rabbit escape from one of the cages and unfortunately she did not survive this time. Niko went out to do chores early this morning and Ama went out with him and caught the rabbit. Just like with Little Bit, Ama didn't break the skin at all. Niko grabbed the rabbit right away and brought her inside to us. She was alive and moving some, but obviously injured. I gave her some Benamine I have on hand for the goats. It is a pain killer and muscle relaxer. She died almost immediately after the injection. I thought I might have given her an overdose or maybe rabbits aren't suppose to get Benamine. I still have to check that out.

Stef butchered the rabbit and we were surprised at how much meat was on it. I was very impressed. Stef discovered that the rabbit had many broken ribs and a punctured lung, so I probably helped her die a little more peacefully with the Benamine, not overdosed her.

After stef cleaned the rabbit he set it on the kitchen counter for me to cut into smaller chunks to feed the dogs later. Niko was disappointed to learn the dogs were going to get to eat the rabbit and not us. I was pretty impressed with that. It did look yummy.

Rabbit Update

We did not get any babies. Stef accidentally caved in some of their burrow and we think they died. Anyway, we are trying again. We put one male in the colony and 2 females in a cage to mate with the other two males in cages. Well, the boys were definitely ready for some nookie, but the girls absolutely refused. They laid flat then stood straight up so the boys couldn't get to them. I tried to hold the girls so the boys could get it done but we just couldn't get it right. Not sure what to do with them now.

Found

We found the escaped male rabbit. He was just hanging out behind the barn.

Rabbit Update

The rabbits should have been due around the first of May. Because we raise them in a colony and they have a burrow we will not know if they had any kits until they pop their fuzzy heads up in about 2 weeks. I have read that after rabbits have the babies they will close up the burrow. I don't know how they get fed or breath or anything else, this is just what I've been told by other colony raisers. After the big storm Sunday night the entrance to their burrow was closed up and now I'm not sure whether it was the stormwaters or the rabbits that did it. I think it was the rabbits, I think if it was the storm they would be trying to redig it. Guess we will find out in a week or two.

Also we have a missing male. Somehow he got his cage door open and jumped 4 feet to his escape. I hope we will see him around soon. Everyone was worried about the bunnies in the colony and we lose the one in a cage!

Randy Rabbit!

We put one of our bucks in with the girls today. Everything went great. No fighting at all, though he did get a bit of dirt kicked in his face when he was sniffing around the girls privates. Unfortunately for him they are playing hard to get.

You know how rabbits multiply right?? I looked at my pictures today and thought this was hilarious:





Also the girls have been busy bunnies. They are putting a basement in under the Bunny Cabana. They are actually digging some of the Cabana out so it is not so stable anymore. Looks like they may have gotten past our buried chicken wire and are on their way to the goat buck pen. I'm not sure though, guess we will find out. Hopefully we will be seeing baby bunnies poking their heads out of here in a little over a month!

Happy Bunnies

The buns are enjoying their new home. We had an escapee this morning. She found a crach in the door to get out of and then tried to dig herself back in. We found her huddled up in a corner on the outside of the pen. She is happy to be back with her buddies now.
